### Lesson Plan: Athletics (Field Events) for Junior Secondary 1
#### Lesson Duration: 90 minutes
#### Objectives:
1. To introduce students to the basic techniques of field events.
2. To develop students' understanding of safety measures during field events.
3. To teach the fundamental skills of shot put, long jump, and javelin throw.
4. To engage students in practical activities to apply the techniques learned.
#### Materials Needed:
- Shot put balls (appropriate weight for age group)
- Javelins (safety-approved, appropriate size)
- Measuring tape
- Cones and markers
- Long jump pit or suitable area
- Whistle
- Notebooks and pens for students
#### Lesson Structure:
**Warm-Up (15 minutes)**
- **General Warm-Up (5 minutes):**
- Jogging around the track or field (2 minutes)
- Dynamic stretches (arm circles, leg swings, high knees)
- Joint rotations (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders)
- **Specific Warm-Up (10 minutes):**
- Light practice movements relevant to field events:
- Overhead throws with a light ball for shot put.
- Bounding and skipping for long jump.
- Air throws with a pencil or small stick to mimic javelin throw.
**Introduction & Explanation (15 minutes)**
- **Introduction to Field Events: (5 minutes)**
- Brief explanation of each field event (shot put, long jump, javelin throw)
- Importance of each event in athletics.
- **Safety Guidelines (10 minutes):**
- Discuss the safety measures to be followed during practice.
- Emphasize the use of proper footwear and warm-ups to avoid injuries.
- Explain the importance of spatial awareness, especially when others are throwing.
**Skill Development & Practice (45 minutes)**
- **Rotation 1: Shot Put Technique (15 minutes)**
- Explanation and demonstration of grip, stance, and release.
- Students practice the grip and stance without the equipment.
- Guided practice with the equipment under supervision.

- **Rotation 2: Long Jump Technique (15 minutes)**
- Explanation and demonstration of approach, takeoff, flight, and landing.
- Students practice the approach run.
- Guided practice with the takeoff and landing techniques.

- **Rotation 3: Javelin Throw Technique (15 minutes)**
- Explanation and demonstration of grip, stance, and release.
- Students practice throwing motion using a safe prop (no javelins initially).
- Guided practice with the javelin under supervision.

**Cool Down & Reflection (15 minutes)**
- **Cool Down Exercises (5 minutes):**
- Gentle jogging and walking to lower heart rate.
- Static stretching focusing on muscles used (shoulders, arms, legs).
- **Class Discussion & Reflection (10 minutes):**
- Gather students and discuss what they learned.
- Ask students to reflect on which event they found most challenging and why.
- Encourage students to write down key points and personal observations in their notebooks.
**Assessment:**
- Observe students' participation and engagement during activities.
- Provide immediate feedback during practice sessions.
- Check students’ understanding through Q&A during the reflection session.
- Assess students' written notes to evaluate their grasp of the key techniques and safety measures.
